Minneapolis Homes for Sale

Bicycling along the parkways on a summer evening…skateboarding along the blacktop pathways of the west bank of the Mississippi…renting a paddleboat on Lake Calhoun…catching sunfish from the Lake Nokomis Bridge with your dad…swimming in Lake Hiawatha…family picnics at Minnehaha Falls…grassy boulevards festooned with pink, flowering crab-apple trees…pulling in catfish from those white sandbars on the Mississippi. If you grew up here, these are the balmy memories that waft through your mind when you hear the word “Minneapolis.” As a child, you wondered, “Why can’t it always be summer?” A home in Minneapolis meant that any of these places were just a short bike-ride away.

If you have grown up and moved to the “burbs,” you still come back on leisure days to the “City of Lakes.” You miss the bike trails that follow Minnehaha Creek, the trolley rides and bandshell at Lake Harriet, fireworks at Powderhorn Park, or some of the those other magical childhood places. Perhaps you come to bike the 50 mile Minneapolis Grand Rounds that runs along streets so entirely covered by the canopies of hardwood trees that they look like big green and leafy tunnels. As an adult, there are numerous cultural  venues that also lure you back to this city, including the Guthrie and the Walker Arts Center. Before you head back home, you might even stop at Matt’s, a three-two bar that is famous for grilling the best “Juicy Lucy” burger in the entire state. Next year you know you will be back in Minneapolis because the Minnesota Twins will be putting baseball back where it belongs- outdoors!

In the Beginning…

In 1680, Father Louis Hennepin, was exploring along the Mississippi River and settled by St. Anthony Falls, the only water falls along the Mississippi River. In 1819, Fort Snelling was established on the conjunction of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers, which was the first major military focus in the area. Eventually the towns of St. Anthony and Minneapolis were formed near the falls. In 1872 they merged into the one town of Minneapolis. Although there were many sawmills along the river the flour mills became the main industry in the area and the city became know as Mill City. The flour industry helped to bring in the railroads, banking and the establishment of the Minneapolis Grain Exchange, where trading of grain was done on the trading floor until 2008, when computers took over the hustle and bustle of the wild morning grain trade. Today, the Minneapolis economy is one of the most diversified, and includes everything from financing to high-tech ventures.
